Planning for Your Outdoor Furniture

Whether you want to add a few deck chairs or create an elaborate setting for outdoor parties, the options for your outdoor furniture are wide. Perhaps the first choice you must make in deciding on outdoor furniture is the material you want to use. Aside from the obvious issues of expense, deciding on the material is often a matter of personal style. Some are satisfied with the bare minimum and simply want something functional while others may put more emphasis on aesthetics. It’s also a good idea to consider alternatives to your first choice in materials just in case that choice proves too expensive or otherwise prohibitive.

Once you have determined the materials you are interested in using, it’s a good idea to simply go outside to your deck or patio and try and visualize how you’d like it to look once everything is in place. You might even grab a sketch pad and a pen and draw out a simple diagram of where you’d like everything to be. It doesn’t have to be complicated and perfectly measured out to be beneficial.

For those with larger patios or decks, you may even find that you have enough room for “zones” of patio furniture to give the feel of having different rooms on the deck. For example, if you are lucky enough to have a deck that extends through much of the backyard, you may want a small area for reading and relaxing and a larger area for group gatherings. You could either delineate these areas with a lattice partition or a less intrusive change in furniture material and style.

Once you have a good idea of what you want your patio or deck to look like and what materials you have in mind, you can begin looking at prices and availability. Obviously, common outdoor furniture materials such as plastic will be widely available and inexpensive while more unique and elegant materials such as teak may be more difficult to find and have more variance in price.
